SO Eastbourne at Bewl Water Dragon Boats
What a fab day everyone had on the 13th September when they entered into the spirit of Dragon Boat Racing at Bewl Water. Athletes were supported by relations and friends and had a wonderful opportunity in joining in with the racing - we were only allowed two athletes per race, the rest of the team being made up from their supporters. This was a "first" for Eastbourne and apart from 4 people who had taken part before, everyone was a novice! Despite this, "Eastbourne Specials", as the team was called, managed a time of 1.18 on their third attempt and came 29th out of 48.
All those participating collected sponsorship and the group ran a tombola on the day. Many people showed great interest in Special Olympics and wanted to know more about it - which was another plus!
All monies raised will go towards taking the athletes to the Leicester National Games.
Everyone was really keen to take part again next year, so fingers crossed that we get the opportunity.
Very good exposure we thought.

Indoor National Games at Picketts Lock
Eleven athletes from the Eastbourne group took part in the 2 day indoor National Games at Picketts Lock in March. They competed in track (200m or 60m) and field (long jump, standing long jump and shotput), together with various relays.
Competition was strong with some 170 athletes taking part from around the country. The youngsters from Eastbourne were proud to achieve 5 gold, 8 silver and 2 bronze medals as well as 9 participation ribbons, between them.
Families and friends went along to support the athletes and they all had accommodation in a local Travelodge.
Picketts Lock is a superb venue, having only been opened some 2 years ago. It will be used as a training track for the 2012 Olympics.
